Concept 'Cloak'

Launch of recycled 3D printed pendant lamp

In collaboration with Signify, inspired by layers of fabric from fashion

Unveiling of sustainable pendant lamp

At Milan Design Week, the new, sustainable 'Cloak' luminaire was unveiled. This special, 3D printed pendant lamp was designed by Amsterdam industrial designer Basten Leijh, commissioned by Signify (Philips MyCreation).

Sustainable sourcing and circular use of raw materials is in the designer DNA of studio Bleijh, and formed a 1-to-1 match with Signify's vision.

The concept was inspired by the layering of flower calyxes and fabrics from fashion.

Perfect match

The sustainable values of design studio Bleijh and world leader in lighting Signify, have formed the perfect match for the design of the 'Cloak' pendant lamp.

Where industrial designer Basten Leijh always looks at the origin and properties of raw materials - requirement: recycled and circularly usable - , Signify focuses on a sustainable production method with its special 3D printing technology.

That lit a light for the two specialists and formed a collaboration with a stage-worthy result.

Layering of fabrics

The sustainable pendant lamp was created by inspiration from nature and fashion: the layering of flower calyxes and fabrics. To create a natural-looking lamp using Signify's hi-tech 3D printing technology was the challenge for Bleijh. The designer turned the lines, used in this printing technique, into natural layering.

With all design freedom, Basten succeeded in designing a lamp that can adapt to any interior due to its round shape and different layers, as well as creating a warm atmosphere through a special light effect.

Basten Leijh: ''I'm very proud of this collaboration with a global brand like Signify, which values sustainability. This made it a no-brainer for me to work together. Totally sustainably produced, local and with recycled materials. Awesome. I hope that my inspiration - the layering of how a garment falls around a body - shows up nicely in this 3D pendant lamp. Of course, it's icing on the cake that 'Cloak' gets to 'shine' first at an event like Milan Design Week.’’

''It's special and beautiful to see how Basten got to work on the task of designing a 3D luminaire that doesn't look technical. We were so positively surprised. This deserves a place like Milan Design Week to be presented. A true addition to our 3D lighting collection,’’ according to Kevin Raaijmakers, commercial director at Philips MyCreation (Signify's lighting brand).

'Cloak' is now available to order for businesses and consumers. The sustainable pendant is available in white or pink, starting at €209,99. 'Cloak' is produced locally and printed per order so that no stock is created. In this area, too, consideration is given to the best production method for our planet.
